Sub Attack Version 1.11

Introduction
Sub Attack is based on the old "shoot the ships" arcade game. The idea is
that you have to launch your torpedo at the correct time so that the torpedo
meets the ship as they both travel across the screen. The concept is simple
(I'm sure that you've seen it before...).
This documentation file is used both for the registered and shareware versions
of Sub Attack. Differences are detailed (where appropriate).
The controls
Sub Attack is controlled using the mouse. The left button fires the torpedo.
The catch here is that you only have one torpedo on the screen at any one
time. The right mouse button brings up another screen which explains the
scoring and has buttons for selecting the "about", "credits", "high score"
and "help" screens.
Scoring
Points are awarded for destroying ships (what else?). There are four types
of ship, each travelling at a different speed. The faster the ship, the more
points you get. After you destroy 20 ships, you move to the next level.
Ships are launched more frequently on progressive levels. If you miss 20
ships, the game ends.
Version 1.11
Version 1.11 has been recompiled with AMOS Compiler 1.35 to support all versions
of WorkBench, including AGA machines. See the "Supported Systems" section for
more information.
Version 1.10
Version 1.10 has some enhancements and bug fixes included. The main difference
is support for NTSC machines for my US friends (Hi folks, I told you it would
happen eventually!).
There are a few other small changes (bug fixes? who said bug fixes?), and I'll
let you find them for yourself. The playing screens used on both NTSC and PAL
systems are identical, with the exception that the NTSC machines will have
less sky (it's only there for decoration anyway). The menu screen has changed
slightly, as I've moved the buttons up so they can be seen on an NTSC screen.
I hope you like version 1.10!!!!
Systems Supported
This game was developed and compiled using AMOS and AMOS Compiler (Copyright
Euorpress) version 1.35, which supports Workbench 1.3, 2, and 3. This means
that this game should work on A500, A600, A1200, A2000, A3000 and A4000
machines. I do my best to support machines available at the time of
writing the game, however I obviously cannot test every aspect of the game on
every machine. If for some reason the game doesn't work, check the 'Troubles?'
section below, and send me a polite letter, and I'll see if I can help.
Obviously, registered users get priority. Abusive letters (such as one I
received from England) will get no response.
People who write shareware and public domain software do so because they enjoy
it - abuse will only result in LESS software being developed for public release.
We can't hope to make our shareware profitable, but we do hope that we are
respected for our efforts. End of sermon.
The Shareware Stuff
The registered version of Sub Attack differs from the Shareware version in a
number of ways:
- The registered version allows you to play another game without clicking
on the icon again (a requestor comes up whenever a game finishes).
- Registered versions are registered to specific people, and these people
have support for the software. In other words, I'll try and fix and bugs
that are found. I'll also send registered users Version 2 (when I complete
it). Version 1.10 (and NTSC support) comes as a direct result of user
feedback. If you have any other ideas, then let me know!!!!
- The shareware version is not supported. Bug fixes and enhancements will be
supplied to registered users only.
- The registered version doesn't have the annoying shareware message which
pops up on a random basis.
Registration Details
To make registration easier, you can send money in your own local currency
(cash please!). The amounts are listed in the table below.
To register for Sub Attack, please send the appropriate amount to:
Perry Rosenboom
Box 333

Australia
Country Registration
------- ------------
Australia $10.00
New Zealand $15.00
USA $10.00
England £5.00
Germany Dm 10,00
Canada $10.00
Please send cash only as our banks can act like robbers and charge us $6.00 to
change a foreign cheque. Cheques in Aus$ drawn on and Australian Bank are
also acceptable. Prices are based mainly on the exchange rate, although it's
a little difficult because our dollar goes up and down like a yo-yo! If your
country is not listed here and you would like to register, then please contact
me!
Troubles?
Most problems seem to be caused by low memory. If you notice that the screen
is not refreshing correctly, or that the menu bar doesn't disappear, you've
got memory problems. Most games these days are designed to work in 1Mb
minimum, and this game is no different. If you have 1Mb or more and the game
is still presenting problems (especially after you have been playing the same
game for some time), then the memory may be fragmented. Try closing down some
other programs, or closing down the game and restarting it.
The other problem which I have heard of can occur on Workbench 2 and Workbench
3 systems. On these systems, it is possble to change the default font to
something other than 'Topaz 8'. This game was written using the default Topaz
8 font, so if you notice that text does not fit properly in boxes or on the
screen, you may need to alter your Workbench setting and restore 'Topaz 8' as
the default font.
Thanks and previous registrations
In version 1.00 I said that I'd thank people who wrote to me or registered,
so here it is!
Thanks to Bill Spring (Frankfurt, Germany) who sent me a letter before I even
knew that Fred Fish had released the original version of SubAttack! on disk 554.
Thanks also to Stan Kendall (Barrington IL, USA). Stan very kindly took the
trouble to send me some photos of my game running on an NTSC machine. Here it
is Stan!!!!
Thanks to the following people who registered for Version 1.0, and who will
have received registered versions of Sub Attack 1.10 before the shareware
version is released (yes - you do have some privileges when you register!)
Bill Spring - Frankfurt, Germany
Stan Kendall - Barrington, IL, USA
Mauricio Telleria - Edmonton, Canada
The Humphries Family - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
A big "thank you" to Fred Fish!
Distribution of Sub Attack and
other boring terms and conditions
The SHAREWARE Version of Sub Attack may be freely distributed, providing this
documentation file accompanies the game. Neither the Game or this
documentation may be altered in any way without the Author's written
permission. No more than a reasonable fee for copying and distribution should
be charged for the Shareware Version of Sub Attack.
Registered Versions of Sub Attack are provided only to the registered user
and are not to be copied or distributed under any circumstances, unless prior
permission has been provided in writing by the Author (after all, a great deal
of time has gone into writing this game).
Both the title screen and the "About" screen clearly display whether the
version of the game you are playing is shareware or registered.
High Scores
At the time of writing this documentation, my high score was 10340 (Level 12).
Let me know if you can do better, and I'll put a high score list in the next
version of the documentation.
End bit
Well, that's it. There is not much more I can say about "Sub Attack", except
that I hope you enjoy it.
"Sub Attack" was proudly written in AMOS, © Europress
and compiled using the AMOS compiler (Thanks Francois!).
Special thanks to Andy K and all those who register (I'll name you in the next
release!).
Sub Attack is © 1991, 1992 by Perry Rosenboom. The ships used in Sub Attack
are based on the sprites supplied with AMOS.
